Musical FeaturesCollection for solo marimba contains 7 movements, Capricious, Octave Etude No.3, Prelude, Prisms, Reflections, Summer Reverie, and Sunset, with most of the movements focusing on a different particular technical element of 4 mallet playing.

Collection for solo Marimba is highly useful in the sense that it contains many exercises and short pieces for beginning players, but can also be used for performance, challenging young players to perform a larger work than is usually available.
Technical Features1. Capricious: This movement focuses on alternating stroke in groupings of 2 and 3. The development of the movement is first driven by changes in harmony over several measures, and waves of dynamics that slowly grow and fade. As it develops, the hands become more active in a linear fashion, creating moving lines, not just blocks of harmony and rhythm.

2. Octave etude, No. 3: As is suggested by the title, this movement is a exercise in octaves, with both hands constantly in the large-interval octave position. Like Capricious, the movement begins with chords that stay in place for a few measures before changing chords. Later, the melody moves chromatically at intervals of thirds. The composer included very specific dynamic and articulation markings, such as slurs and accents.

3. Prelude: Like Fissinger’s Mist, Prelude is a slow chorale in which the composer did not notate any rolls, giving the performer the freedom to decide how to execute the rolls, other whether or not to use them at all.

4. Prisms is a study in alternating strokes, always in a 1-3-2-4 permutation. The development of the piece is generally guided by large phrases of changing dynamics, with no real linear melody, much like Capricious. Again, the composer is very specific with phrase and dynamic markings, including long slurs spanning multiple measures.

5. The last three movements, Reflections, Summer Reverie, and Sunset, are chorales. Like Prelude, rolls are not notated and the performer may choose to focus on different types of rolls for each piece.
