Winner of what may have been the earliest marimba composition contest ever held, the Sarmientos was premiered by Vida Chenoweth in 1957. Sarmientos is a well-known conductor and composer in his native Guatemala. This important work has been available only in manuscript for many years, but now it has been engraved and fully corrected by the composer. A three-movement work of great vitality with Guatemalan-influenced rhythms and melodies, it is performable by any good collegiate marimbist.
