Musical FeaturesFeatures variations on 3 themes from Porgy and Bess: “I Loves you, Porgy,” “It Ain’t Necessarily So,” and “Summertime.”
The melodic material is often re-harmonized and frequently features slightly altered rhythms from the original music – truly a “Variation.”
Snippets of the famed xylophone excerpt are found within the piece, but pitch and meter are distorted from the original.
After a brief opening cadenza the piece begins with a lengthy section of double laterals (“I Loves you, Porgy”), followed by a more intense groove section (“It Ain’t Necessarily So).
Numerous, frequent meter changes, including 7/16, 6/8, 9/8, 3/8
Technical FeaturesHeavy use of double laterals required, with intervals as large as an octave.
One-handed rolls in the intervals of M7ths and octaves.
Some complicated rhythmic shifts going from triplets to quintuplets to 32nds.
Use of body dampening against the keys (as seen in some of Sammut’s other works)
This is an advanced piece that will require mastery of 4-mallet technique and independence of hands; that said, it is largely very idiomatic.
