Product Information

(New expanded 12-movement edition) A delightful set of programmatic works that achieved standard repertoire status almost instantly when it was first transcribed 25 years ago. Shorter sets can be selected from the 12 in this collection and rearranged creatively in almost any order. One possibility is to make a five-movement set of Songs and Dances from the middle five selections.

This collection is included on the CD Marimba When and available as part of the sheet music collection of all pieces from Marimba When.

Musical FeaturesTheoretically the form/meter/melody/harmony is entirely in line with conventional norms of the classical/romantic periods. As they were originally children’s songs for piano, they are more conservative musically than much of Tchaikovsky’s output, but his gift for lyricism is readily apparent. All of the movements are of course then, tonal. The keys, meter, and tempo for each movement are listed below:

I. Song of the Lark - G major | ¾ | Allegro (100 to 130)
II. Morning Prayer - G major | ¾ | Lento (40)
III. The Hobby Horse - D major | 3/8 | (80 to 100)
IV. Italian Song - E major | 3/8 | Vivo (dotted quartet 56-66)
V. German Song - E flat major | ¾ | Tranquillo
VI. Waltz - E flat major | ¾ | Tempo di waltz
VII. Neopolitan Dance Song - E flat major | 2/4 | Comodo (grazioso)
VIII. Mazurk - D minor | ¾ | Tempo di Mazurka
IX. The Doll’s Burial - C minor | 2/4 | Grave (eighth note = 66)
X. The New Doll - B flat major | 3/8 | (dotted quarter = 88)
XI. Nursery Tale - C major | 2/4 | Moderato
XII. Sweet Dreams - C major | ¾ | Allegretto
Technical FeaturesBeing a transcription, this piece is technically more difficult than it’s musical oeuvre would suggest. While much of this is tame on piano, interval stretches and reaches become more difficult on marimba. Player must have a firm grasp of all intervallic shifts and stroke types, and while it’s possible to execute many of the slower movements with traditional rolls, Stevens notates to use lateral or independent rolls much of the time (raising the level of difficulty).
DurationAll 12 movements, roughly 18 to 20 minutes (most average 1 to 2 min. in length)
