Musical FeaturesReminiscent of Baroque counterpoint, Ure has cleverly crafted a beautiful piece of contemporary marimba music. While using counterpoint compositional methods, the unique harmonic motion creates a “modern” twist to the characteristic layering effects of Baroque music. The tempo remains slow and steady, beginning with a homophonic statement of the theme. Accompaniment lines are soon added, but the primary theme is ever-present in the music. Counter-themes and secondary motives are also utilized to create continued interest and direction, while passing and color tones are infused into the graceful flow of the ABCA’ structure. While dynamics are clearly marked, the performer will need to pay close attention to the balance of the voices to insure the melody line is always clearly heard.
Technical FeaturesThis piece requires a player who is confident with playing independent lines between the hands and making mature musical decisions. Tempo is not a concern, as the quarter-note equals 52 speed remains the same throughout the simple meter time signatures. There are several sections using a wide reach between the hands and other sections requiring double vertical and single alternating octaves in the left hand. Several sections require the player to alternate between double vertical and single independent strokes for extended passages. The piece fits well on the instrument and in the hands, but will require great patience to discover the musical nuances and technical intricacies of the work.
