Seminar FAQs

Malletech - LHS Summer Marimba Seminar

Q: Do I have to be in college to apply?
A: No. We ask that you have completed at least one year of college as there are no chaperones at the seminar. But if you have already graduated college and would just like to further your skills, you are certainly welcome to apply! Because there are no chaperones at this seminar, we can not accept high school students. However, there are two other summer seminars with LHS that are open to high school students: New Jersey and Indiana.

Q: I'm a beginner student. Can I still apply?
A: Of course. The seminar is open to students of all abilities. We cover a lot of ground and everyone can benefit from a review of some of the fundamentals as well as some of the more advanced concepts.

Q: Do I have to pay my tuition in full when I submit my application?
A: Yes. Your application is not considered complete without tuition, letter of recommendation, personal letter and repertoire list. Please be sure to include all documents with your application.

Q: How do you accept payment?
A: A check is the most common form of payment. International students wishing to wire their tuition payment should e-mail This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
for bank information. Please note, a wire transfer incurs a $15 bank fee which must be payed by the student in addition to the full tuition amount.

Q: I submitted my application. When will I hear whether I've been accepted?
A: Soon! If you have submitted your application close to one of the application deadlines, please wait until the application deadline has passed. If you ever want to check on the status of your application, please e-mail This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Q: What about the hotel?
A: Information about reserving a room at the hotel will be included in your acceptance packet. When you have been accepted to the seminar, you will need to call the innkeeper and reserve a room. You can arrange payment for the hotel with the innkeeper directly.

Q: What's the closest airport to the seminar?
A: Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). It's about 45 minutes away from the seminar site.

Q: What kind of transportation is available from the airport to the hotel?
A: There is a shuttle that runs from the airport to a train station along the NJ Coast Line. Take the shuttle/tram to the Newark Liberty station stop and then take the New Jersey Coast Line train from there down to Asbury Park station. Approximate cost of a one-way ticket is $17.50.

Q: Do I need a car?
A: Not at all. Some students will travel by car and on-street parking is available. For those without a car, the hotel, classroom and even the Malletech factory are all within walking distance. For the price of an ice cream cone, many students have gotten rides from their colleagues if necessary.

Q: Do I need a marimba for the seminar? And will it fit in my room?
A: Absolutely. You will need a marimba (NO resonators!) to practice on for the duration of the seminar. And although some of the larger sizes make for a "cozier" fit in your room, we have never had a student who couldn't fit a marimba in his or her room.

Q: Can I rent a marimba? What does that cost?
A: We do offer the option for students to rent marimbas while they're here. This is an especially good option for international students or anyone taking a plane. The cost varies, depending on the size and quality of the instruments available. We will not know exactly which instruments are available for renting until a few weeks before the seminar starts. Approximate costs range from $300-$500.

Q: What about food?
A: Food options are varied and plentiful in and around Ocean Grove, but you will be responsible for finding your meals on your own. The hotel will allow students to use the refrigerator to store leftovers and snacks. The hotel does not allow hot plates or coffee makers in your room due to the risk of fire. Ocean Grove is a historic town: buildings are old and close to one another.

Q: Is there a laundromat nearby?
A: Of course. There are several within walking distance from your hotel if you need to do laundry while you're here.

Q: Is there a dress code for the seminar or concerts?
A: No, not really. Shirt and shoes are required. But there is no formal attire necessary. Plan for hot and humid days at the Jersey Shore. Temperatures along the shore can get breezy in the evenings, so pack a light jacket or sweater. Otherwise, pack to be comfortable. Bring shoes that can handle the daily walk between hotel and classroom.

Q: I have more questions. Who can I ask?
A: We will try to update this page with any future questions that come in. But if you have any questions or concerns, please e-mail This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
